Since last post, I've decided to turn more attention to contemporary novels than historicals. That's not to say I won't finish PEACEWEAVER; since that tale's in my head, I most likely will finish it. Just not right away.
So I went back to a story I started 2-3 years ago, called A ROSE IN LATE OCTOBER. I like this story...
So why is it STUCK? Man alive, if I knew that I'd tell ya. I got it to 35K words and it's just sitting there, glaring at me, daring me to find a path for it to travel.
So far that path hasn't revealed itself to me. I told my crit partner I need to glare back, and drink another pot of coffee, before I get an inkling where it should go.
External disaster? No, just did that. Internal gut-gnawing? Did that, too. Up the conflict? I'm thinking yes, though I can't tell which of the Main Characters needs to have his/her anguish-level intensified at this point in the story.
Gaargh! Did I mention I hate when a story sticks somewhere and won't budge?

I hear you. I've got about 3 WIPs that are stuck because somewhere down the line they need research---intensive research. So what's stopping me from writing up to that point? Maybe it's some weird writer's ailment. "I don't want to go if I can't see the end." Reminds me of that witty saying about how when you drive at night you can only see as far as your headlights, but you can drive the whole distance that way.
Oh well, back to work.

You are not alone. Sounds to me you are experiencing what I call 'Writer's Pause'. It's my label for what is commonly known as Writers Block. It's just a pause in the writing, my friend, a breather. It's a time just to let that manuscript ruminate in your imagination. What comes next will come to you. Hang in there.
Father I come to your right now for Deb. She is stuck in a story and doesn't know where to go but you do. I pray you give her the words to write that will glorify you and bring encouragement to others. I pray for a blessing upon her writing. In Jesus name, Amen
